How did this get Published ????

I just slogged through a best seller, A Discovery of Witches, which was like reading a First Grade version of a novel.

I truly wanted to like this one. Sadly, it dragged on and on. The plot was semi interesting, yet the writing and characters are so lacking! How did DISCOVERY get past editing? We are TOLD so much, it is like reading a first draft.

The characters are Okay, and the setting is superb, but Harkness squanders all with Mary Sues and telling each move they make. Surprising enough, the main Mary Sue is the male love interest. My favorite part is the house, and Sophie at the end. Getting to the end was difficult and I won't be reading the sequel.
In spite of the rich historical details, which I enjoyed, the writing put me off.
