En France, Les Cigarettes pour les femmes
Yes, the French are known for sneering at the rest of the world through a haze of cigarette smoke. As seen on this pack of Gitanes, women figured hugely as a prime target audience.
Problem is, in the 1680's when the rest of the world began puffing away, Louis XIV BANNED TOBACCO.
Go figure.
The Sun King began a reign of Absolutism in which he tried to dictate the mores of the entire society of France.
My WIP deals with a young woman rebelling against all the strictness.
A real quote from the Bishop who tutored Louis's son:
"Blasphemy,
sacrilege and slander are now punishable crimes, just as bad as theft. The
royal police will evaluate behavior according to observance of the tenants of
the Catholic Church."
He railed
rail that
fornication and adultery were crimes exclusive to females. Ugh!
Tune in for Adrienne's response to tyrannical social and religious mores.
