It's good to get feedback before submitting your work for publication. One place to get tips is Miss Snark's First Victim. They have four or five contests per year to see if writers have the right stuff.
This week it was First Five Sentences. I submitted and got in. Whew! Now I wait to see the other 24 entrants and we critique our entries. I like these because they make me REALLY hone every word of my story. Also, I get honest feedback from others close to the industry.
